CSIC, the Spanish National Research Council, is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe, It is an autonomous multi-sectoral, multi-disciplinary public research composed of around 110 research institutes in all research areas with a total staff of more than 15000 employees. Three CSIC institutes are involved in this project, the Barcelona Microelectronics Institute of the National Microelectronics Center (IMB-CNM), the Materials Science Institute of Barcelona, (ICMAB), and the Materials Science Institute of Madrid, (ICMM). The two Barcelona institutes are in the UAB Bellaterra Campus, and so, co-located with ALBA synchrotron.

IMB-CNM hosts near 100 researchers, an extra 70 research engineers and technicians. It is arranged in eight different research groups doing technology-intensive science with micro and nanotechnologies dealing with microelectronics and physical, chemical and biomedical micro and nanosystems.

ICMAB deals with research in Advanced Functional Materials with 60 permanent and a total of >200 researchers. Its Strategic Research Program face three social grand-challenges: clean and secure energy, smart and sustainable electronics and smart nanomedicine through mission-oriented research lines.

ICMM hosts more than 400 researchers and is amongst the largest institutes within CSIC. Its research lines cover all aspects of materials science from fundamentals to applications, both from experimental and theoretical approaches.

DESY The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron is one of the world leading accelerator centres for investigating the structure of matter. Researchers use the large-scale facilities at DESY to explore the microcosm in all its variety – from the interactions of tiny elementary particles and the behaviour of new types of nanomaterials to biomolecular processes that are essential to life.

The DESY campus hosts several large, international and regional collaborations, like the Centre for X-ray and Nano Science (CXNS), the Centre for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL), the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), the Centre for Hybrid Nanostructures (CHYN) and very recently the Center for Data and Computing in Natural Science (CDCS), the Center for Integrated Multiscale Materials Systems (CIMMS) and the Centre for Molecular Water Science (CMWS) all together with the University of Hamburg. Therefore, the DESY site offers ideal prerequisites to be a nucleation centre for developing new emerging ideas on nanoscience.

DESY operates PETRA III, one of the world's brightest storage-ring-based X-ray radiation sources. PETRA III offers scientists outstanding opportunities for experiments with X-rays of exceptionally high brilliance. The DESY NanoLab as part of the CXNS provides on-site methods for nanoscience complementary to the advanced X-ray sources PETRA III, FLASH and X-FEL and is operated by the DESY Research Group X-ray Physics and Nanoscience as a facility for users and for in-house research.

It actively participates to the NFFA-Europe Research Infrastructure and have provided, so far, 411 days of access to 59 Researchers, involved to 39 research projects. Furthermore, the Laser Group of FORTH-IESL operates as a European Laser Research Infrastructure currently in the frame of LASERLAB-Europe, and also participates in the Extreme Laser, ESFRI, Infrastructure (ELI). ICN2 The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is a non-profit foundation established to pursue excellence in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. It is a place where both fundamental and applied research receive strong support, as do efforts to facilitate the adoption and integration of nanotechnologies into society and industry. Basic science is developed primarily via European and national collaborative projects. Application oriented research concentrates in Health, Information and Communication Technologies, Energy, and Environment, and is often carried out together with the industry. Transfer and business development is led by a specialized unit that trains and supports researchers in identifying and preparing for commercialisation opportunities.

ICN2 interacts closely with universities, research centres, technology centres, private sector R&D entities, the scientific community and society at large. The institute's achievements were recognised by the Spanish Government in 2014 with the award of the prestigious Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation, an award that was renewed in 2018. ICN2 is one of the research centers belonging to the CERCA Institution of the Government of Catalonia, and a founding member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). INL The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, is the first, and so far the only, fully international research organization in Europe in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. INL is an international intergovernmental research organization (IGRO) with the mission to perform cutting-edge research and development in interdisciplinary nanotechnology and to function as an innovation integrator in multiple application domains. INL was created under an international legal framework similar to that of other International Research Organizations, such as CERN, EMBL, or ESA, with the aim to become a global center of excellence in applied nanotechnology research.

INL had been established in 2005 by a joint decision of the Governments of Portugal and Spain. Operating since late 2010, following a total investment of 100 M€, INL is part of the Portuguese Road Map of Research Infrastructures (2014-2020). INL is currently financed by member states contributions (40%), competitive funds from H2020 calls and national PT2020 scientific calls (40%) and Industry collaboration and user fees (20%).

The INL infrastructure provides a high-tech research environment for INL staff and users. INL campus extends over an area of 47,000 m2, with 26,000 m2 of buildings. This includes 7,500 m2 of individual and central laboratories, including high-accuracy laboratories, a cleanroom with an area of 1,000 m2, an auditorium and other public areas with 4,800 m2. At the beginning of 2020, there were 368 people of over 40 nationalities working at INL, 312 of them researchers.

JRC The EC Joint Research Centre is a Directorate General of the European commission. The EC JRC is the European's science and knowledge service supporting EU policies within dependent evidence throughout the whole policy cycle. The JRC mission aims at contributing with its research outcomes to a healthy and safe environment, secure energy supplies, sustainable mobility and consumer health and safety.

The JRC activity on nano(bio)technology is focusing on the development of new methods, tools and standards needed for supporting the full exploitation of innovative products based on nanotechnology and/or nanomaterials. For this purpose, the JRC set up a Nanobiotechnology Laboratory featuring state-of-the-art equipped facilities designed to foster interdisciplinary studies. A special emphasis lies on the characterisation of nanomaterials, microplastics, nanomedicines, advanced materials and their interactions with biological systems, as well as on the detection, identification and characterisation of nanomaterials in food and consumer products.

KIT Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was established by the merger of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH and the Universitaet Karlsruhe (TH) on October 01, 2009. KIT is a public non-profit institution bundling the missions of a State University of Baden-Wuerttenberg and of a large-scale research center of the German Helmholtz Association. Within these missions, KIT is operating along the three strategic fields of action of research, higher education, and innovation. The new ETEM is an Environmental Transmission Electron Microscope that provides unique in situ observations of semiconductor nanowire growth at atomic resolution. Lund Nano Lab (LNL) is an open research facility that is available to both academic research groups, start-up and company users.

The LNL, together with nCHREM, are the most important resource parts of NanoLund consortium, which is the one of the world's first nano-research environments. Our world-class clean room facility is equipped with state-of-the-art semiconductor processing and metrology equipment. We welcome all users to access the equipment for fundamental research and development in the fields of materials science, nanotechnology, microelectronics, life science and quantum technology.

Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research centre of excellence, specialized in the synchrotron and Free Electron Laser FEL) radiation and their applications in materials and life sciences. Elettra has built and operates two Synchrotron Radiation sources: the 3rd generation storage ring Elettra, and the seeded FEL source FERMI, and has set up several laboratories that offer complementary techniques to the beamlines, extending their research capabilities. Access to four beamlines is offered throuigh NFFA-Europe: DiProI, ESCAmicroscopy, SISSI, and XAFS.

PRUAB, the UAB Research Park, a linked 3rd party of UAB will be also involved in the project with staff and facilities. PRUAB is a private not-for-profit foundation, established in 2007 as a basic tool for three leading research bodies in the UAB Campus: UAB, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Institute for Agricultural and Food Research &Technology (IRTA) to promote and improve the transfer of knowledge and technology between the University and business. Companies located within the area of the Park and those involved in the University research work, such as spinoff and start-up companies, can also benefit from these services. PRUAB is located within the UAB campus at Bellaterra close to the Alba synchrotron.

SOLEIL, an acronym for “Optimized Light Source of Intermediate Energy to LURE,” is a research center located on the Plate au de Saclay in Saint Aubin, Essonne. More concretely, it is a particle (electron) accelerator that produces the synchrotron radiation, an extremely powerful light that permits exploration of inert or living matter..

SOLEIL is a source of light endowed with extra ordinary properties, necessary for the scientific community:

• high brilliance: 10,000 times brighterthan sunlight
• a wide spectral range: frominfrared (a few μeV) to hard X-rays (100 keV)
• light polarisation: linear, circular, etc.
• pulsed light.

It provides new perspectives in the study of matter with a resolution down to millionths of meters and a sensitivity to all types of materials.

SOLEIL covers fundamentalresearch needs in physics, chemistry, material sciences, life sciences (notably in the crystallography of biological macromolecules), earth sciences, and atmospheric sciences. It offers the use of a wide range of spectroscopic methods from infrared to X-rays, and structural methods such as X-ray diffraction and diffusion.

EuroNanoLab is a new distributed research infrastructure consisting of over 40 state-of-the-art academic nanofabrication centers across Europe. SIAM Platform (University of Namur) expertise in materials characterization relies on its capacity to use and combine various spectroscopies (XPS, ToF-SIMS & IBA). SIAM has several facilities for functionalizing materials and/or synthesizing thin films by plasma treatments and performs fundamental research in materials sciences, surfaces, interfaces and ion/matter interaction. Different kinds of materials and/or samples, coming from materials sciences, life sciences but not only (materials evaluation inside a biological matrix) can be thoroughly analysed.
